More golf fashion: Designs by Jun now at Ginger in Winter Park

Orlando Sentinel | March 24, 2010

At the PGA Merchandise Show two years ago, one of the golf lines that really stood out — for me, at least — was Designs by Jun. They were feminine, fashionable and versatile.

Here’s what Jun Lee said about her line at the time:

“When I come off the golf course, I want to just change my golf shoes to high heels and be ready to go out to dinner.”

I’m not a golfer, but many of the casual/chic pieces could easily fit into my weekend wardrobe.

And here’s the best part: Aimee Collins Hitchner, owner of Ginger boutique in Winter Park’s Hannibal Square, is now carrying Designs by Jun. She’ll be showcasing the line in a trunk show soon, and is hoping Jun will attend.

Designs By Jun First Company to Get spark360 Treatment

“Social Business Television” Tells Former Pro Golfer’s Entrepreneurial Story.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) March 31, 2010 — spark360, a new, innovative business news program that blends broadcast network-style storytelling with the power of online video and social media, launched Wednesday with the story of an athlete-turned-entrepreneur who fashioned a new career – in sports fashion – from the wreckage of a potentially tragic auto accident.

Designs by Jun, founded in 2007 by former pro golfer Jun Lee, is the first featured video on the new spark360.tv portal. Her interview with spark360 host/managing editor Renay San Miguel – along with footage of Lee on the course at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas – is now available on the exclusive spark360 distribution platform, which includes placement on key online video portals such as YouTube and Google Video; spark-branded pages on the top social media networks Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn; a podcast prepared for the Apple iTunes store and integration into mobile applications developed for iPhones, iPod Touches and the forthcoming iPad.

Senior Producer Steven Swaim said, “Designs by Jun was an ideal company to launch the spark360 concept with. Her amazing story coupled with her unbridled passion for her company was one that we felt would translate well to the screen.”

Jun Lee first picked up a golf club at the age of five. Her mother encouraged her to practice and compete, and by the age of 15 she was shooting in the low 70s playing the courses around her home near Seguin, Texas. She had earned a full scholarship to San Jose State University, which at the time had the number one NCAA women’s golf team. She had already excelled on the Junior tour and was competing professionally – but an auto accident resulted in damage to discs in her neck and back. With her pro playing days over, Jun had to focus on other ways to compete, and she remembered the frustrations she felt choosing clothes to play in while on the tour. The result is Designs by Jun, with Lee as president and chief designer. It’s a sports apparel firm that caters to women golfers who want to hit the golf course wearing stylish clothes, but also want to know that what they are wearing is functional and won’t get in the way of victory on the greens.

“The story behind the founding of Jun’s company involves all the elements you look for in a compelling news feature,” said spark360 host/managing editor Renay San Miguel. “There’s certainly enough drama with the car accident that literally spun her into a new direction in life. She was on her way to a successful career on the LPGA tour, and then she had to make some adjustments. But pro athletes do that all the time when competing, and Designs by Jun is her way of channeling her competitive ’spark,’ if you will, into a lucrative yet challenging industry – the sport apparel market.”

“To transition into business, there are so many tough issues that you have to encounter and have to overcome,” Lee told San Miguel. “So I take each obstacle as a shot and you just stay in the moment, stay in present and get over that hurdle that way. I know what women want on the golf course. So yes, I’m very competitive. There are great companies out there and they are very established. At the same time, I have the design and innovation, and I feel like that’s how I can compete.”

Car crash spins former pro golfer to sports fashion world

Like the legendary Jan Stephenson zeroing in on a 30-foot putt to win a major tour championship, Jun Lee had her sights set on a successful career in women’s pro golf.

After all, Jun had the right pedigree, background and training to put the pieces together for what could have been a string of LPGA victories – she started golfing at the age of 5, was shooting in the 60s/low 70s by her teenage years, and she had earned a full scholarship to San Jose State University and its then top-ranked NCAA women’s golf team. And the same competitive fire that got her to that point was already in her blood: her older brother is a world champion marksman who won the gold medal for South Korea in the 50m rifle prone event at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

Then came a terrifying auto accident. Jun’s car was hit by a truck and sent spinning out of control.
”It was really life changing in the sense that when I got hit, I remember the spin and it was where I was thinking, ‘You know what? Just give me one more chance.’” Jun said.
She sustained disc injuries to her neck and back.

Doctors told her that her competitive golfing days were over; whenever she tries to play longer than a typical round of golf, numbness sets in and she faces the risk of serious chronic injuries – possibly paralysis. Even though she was grateful to be alive, Jun knew she would have to channel her competitive energies into a new direction.

Jun found career inspiration through – of all things – frustration. She remembered the kinds of clothes that were available to women golfers while on the junior tour. “The worst thing that can happen with garments when you are competing or playing golf is to be conscious of it, always moving it around and making sure it’s going to be working for your golf swings,” Jun told spark360. “Something as simple as a skort not having pockets – of course golfers need to put their tees somewhere. I wanted a fashionable look, so I wore clothes that fashion designers would try to transition into golf apparel. They were trying to make golf clothes but it wasn’t functional. So that is what inspired me to design women’s golf apparel.”

The result?  Designs by Jun, an Addison, Texas-based company which she founded in 2007. She’s the designer and president of her own company and she knew what she wanted to see in women’s golf apparel as a former competitor.

But the sports apparel industry can be just as competitive as LPGA golf, with millions of dollars at stake every year in sales.  So she went to top designers for advice – and partnerships.
”I picked everybody’s brain, in a sense. Even the manufacturing, production and fabrics; that sort of thing was a learning experience for me.  But it was also natural.  It was something that I’ve always wanted to do and so when you have a passion for something that you want to do, it’s just easy to learn,” Jun said.

Now she gets to proactively deal with the frustrations she experienced looking in pro shops for the right golfing clothes. “All of our bottoms are designed with pockets in the back for scorecards and pockets in the front deep enough for tees,” she said.

Even though Jun is going up against long-standing brand names and competing designers, there’s a need for someone to bring a player’s focus on sports clothing. “What’s interesting in our industry is we’ve got a number of companies that have been in the industry for a long time,” said David Price, golf pro at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas. “We need new ideas.  We need new people coming in.  We need fresh new looks like Jun is bringing in, and there are some different things here that I haven’t seen before.  They don’t want to look the same year after year.  They want to bring new things in and I think that’s what Jun will bring.”

She brought her designs to the 2010 PGA Merchandise Show, and some stores and pro shops are now carrying her work.

For Jun, it’s just another way for her to compete and win.
”To transition into business, there are so many tough issues that you have to encounter and have to overcome,” Jun said. “So I take each obstacle as a shot and you just stay in the moment, stay in present and get over that hurdle that way. I know what women want on the golf course.  And so, yeah, I’m very competitive.  There are great companies out there and they are very established.  At the same time, I have the design and innovation and I feel like that’s how I can compete.”
